Jiffy-7 Forestry Peat Pellets 50 × 95mm – Low-pH Tree & Cutting Propagation
Type: Peat propagation pellet
100% sterile sphagnum peat with no added lime, held in an open-wall net. A pot and growing medium in one: just add water.
Jiffy-7 Forestry Peat Pellets – Grow a Better Root System From Day One
Trees and shrubs are only ever as good as their roots. Start them in a plastic cell, and roots reach the wall, turn, and begin to circle. That spiral never fully unwinds, and plants raised that way often establish slowly and anchor poorly. The Jiffy-7 Forestry pellet was designed to prevent it.
Each pellet starts as a flat, compressed disc of peat. Add water and it swells into a tall, sturdy pellet around 50mm wide and 95mm tall, with plenty of depth for a long root to develop. Its wall is an open net, not plastic. When a root grows through it and meets the air, the tip is naturally air-pruned, so the plant branches out new roots instead of circling. The result is a dense, fibrous, well-anchored root system that establishes quickly once planted.
Why They Work
- No added lime: unlike standard horticultural pellets, the peat is left at a naturally lower pH, which suits many trees and shrubs.
- Sterile sphagnum peat: clean and consistent, so young roots get a disease-free start.
- Open-wall net: air-prunes roots for a natural, branching root system.
- Tall 95mm pellet: room for a deep root before you pot on.
- Minimal transplant shock: the whole pellet goes into the ground or pot, so roots are never disturbed.
Perfect For
- Tree and shrub seedlings: oak, beech, conifers, fruit trees and hedging
- Woody cuttings: fig, vine, hydrangea, rose, blueberry and other shrubs
- Acid-loving plants that prefer a lower pH, such as blueberries, rhododendrons and camellias
- Larger seeds that need a longer time in the pellet before planting out
- Nurseries, schools and community tree-planting projects
How to Use
- Stand the dry pellets in a tray with the hole facing up.
- Pour over lukewarm water and leave them to expand fully to around 95mm tall.
- Tip away the excess and squeeze out some of the water so the pellet isn't sodden. A pellet that can breathe roots faster.
- Sow your seed or push your cutting into the hole.
- Keep warm and humid, and water from below when the pellets start to feel light.
- Once roots show through the net, plant the whole pellet into its pot or straight into the ground.
Feeding
Forestry pellets are unlimed peat with very little feed in them. Once seedlings have their first true leaves, or cuttings have rooted, start a gentle, diluted feed.
🌿 Rose's Pro-Tip: for the best air-pruning, stand the pellets in a tray with gaps or holes around them rather than packing them tightly together. Roots need to meet air at the net to be pruned.
