Nutrients are refined into an exact, known ratio and are immediately available to your plant. This gives you precise, fast-acting, consistent results every time. The tradeoff: it's easier to overfeed and cause root burn if dosing isn't carefully managed, and it doesn't contribute to long-term soil biology the way organic feeds do.
There's an assumption built into most potting soil that the manufacturer knows better than you do what your plant needs. Plagron Lightmix takes the opposite position: it gives a seedling or fresh cutting exactly one week of mineral nutrition — just enough to get roots moving — and then steps back entirely, leaving every decision after that to you.
Worth being precise here: this is a mineral-fertilised mix (NPK 12-14-24), not an organic one — Plagron make a separate "Bio Lightmix" for growers who want that instead. If you're after organic, this isn't your bag. If you want a clean, low-EC peat and perlite base with total control over what comes next, it is.
Who This Is Actually For
The low initial EC (roughly 0.7–1.1 mS/cm) is exactly what suits plants that punish a heavy feed rather than shrug it off:
- Calathea & Goeppertia (Prayer Plants, Zebra Plants, Pinstripe Plants) — quick to sulk at anything richer
- Begonias (Rex, Polka Dot, Cane) — want steady moisture, not a nutrient spike
- Ferns (Boston, Maidenhair, Bird's Nest) — thrive in the loose, perlite-aerated structure
- Peace Lilies — forgiving of most things except a soil that won't drain
- Alocasia & Jewel Alocasias (Polly, Black Velvet) — benefit from the low-salt starting point
- Fresh Cuttings & Seed Germination — the low EC specifically protects new roots from the fertiliser burn a stronger mix would risk
How It Actually Works
A careful blend of peat types and perlite gives Plagron's characteristic light, oxygen-rich structure — airy enough to survive automated irrigation without waterlogging, forgiving enough to handle enthusiastic hand-watering too. The one-week mineral charge (NPK 12-14-24) is deliberately minimal: enough to kickstart rooting, not enough to overwhelm a plant that hasn't built up any tolerance yet. After that week, Plagron's own Alga Grow and Alga Bloom feeds are the natural next step, though any coco or houseplant-specific liquid feed will do the job.

How to Use:
- Fill your pots or trays, tapping the sides to settle the media without pressing it down.
- Plant your seeds, cuttings, or young rooted plants directly.
- Water as normal for the first week — the built-in charge handles feeding.
- Start your own feeding programme after week one, using Plagron's Alga Grow/Bloom or your preferred liquid feed.
