Black Perlite – Charged Horticultural Biochar
Let's get the confession out of the way first: this isn't perlite. It's horticultural biochar. We call it Black Perlite because that's the job most growers will give it — the bit of the mix that keeps soil open, airy and alive — and because "porous carbonised plant matter" has never once sold anything to anyone.
But the difference matters, and it's the whole point. Perlite is a hotel room: clean, empty, and entirely indifferent to who checks in. Biochar is a house. Every granule is riddled with microscopic pores that hold water, grip onto nutrients, and give beneficial soil microbes somewhere to live. A single gram of good biochar can have an internal surface area that would embarrass a tennis court.
There is, however, a catch that most biochar sellers are rather quiet about. Raw biochar is hungry. Put it straight into your mix and it will spend its first few weeks soaking up nitrogen from the soil around it — nitrogen your plants were expecting to eat. Fresh char also tends to be alkaline, dusty, and oddly water-repellent when dry. None of this is fatal. It just means biochar is at its best when someone has done the tedious preparation first. So we did.

Why These Ingredients
Nutrients that biochar can actually hold: Biochar grips positively charged nutrients — potassium, calcium, magnesium and ammonium — far better than others. We chose feeds with that in mind, rather than simply pouring in whatever says "bloom" on the label.
Worm-Humus tea for the biology: Worm castings are the classic way to inoculate biochar with beneficial microbes, turning empty pores into a living habitat.
Natural sugars to feed that biology: BioBizz's sugar-beet-based feeds give those microbes something to eat while they move in.
CalMag in the Veg charge: Pre-loading calcium and magnesium means the char won't quietly strip them from your feed later — especially useful in coco mixes.
Acti-Vera as a natural wetting agent: Dry biochar resists water. Aloe vera helps the charging solution penetrate deep into the pores instead of just coating the surface.
⏳ The 14-Day Charge
Every charged batch spends a full 14 days soaking, stirred daily to keep it fresh and aerobic. There's a reason we don't rush it: the nutrients settle into the char within a few days, but the microbes take their time moving in. Stop at day three and you have biochar that's been fed. Wait two weeks and you have biochar that's been colonised — which is the whole point. It's then drained and packed damp, never soaking wet, so it arrives alive rather than soggy.
How To Use Black Perlite
In potting mixes: Blend at roughly 5–10% of your total mix by volume. Use it alongside perlite, pumice or clay pebbles rather than as a complete replacement — its job is to add life and nutrient-holding power, not to be the only thing keeping your mix open.
As a top dressing: Scatter a thin layer over the surface of established pots and water in.
Rinsed & Buffered version: Charge it before use — soak in your own nutrient solution or worm-casting tea for 7–14 days, stirring daily — or blend it in sparingly. Used raw at high rates, it can temporarily lock up nitrogen.
