No nutrients have been added at all. This gives you total control over feeding from day one, with zero risk of the substrate fighting your own nutrient plan. The tradeoff: you must start feeding immediately — there's no built-in safety net if you forget or under-feed early on.

Black Flag Horticulture™ Classic Succulent Potting Mix

Our Arid Desert Cactus Mix and Alpine Grit Mix both exist because a specific plant, in a specific climate, was going to die without the right substrate. This one exists for a gentler reason: most succulents aren't desert specialists or mountain survivors at all. An Echeveria on a windowsill isn't fighting a British winter or six months without rain — it just wants to dry out properly between waterings, without anyone getting precious about it.

That's a different problem from the other two mixes in this range, and it needed a genuinely different ratio, not just a smaller pinch of grit.

What's Actually In The Bag

  • 50% Coco Coir — more organic content than either Arid or Alpine, because most classic succulents tolerate — and mildly prefer — a touch more moisture retention than a true desert cactus.
  • 30% Perlite — the primary drainage engine here, doing more of the work than grit does in this particular blend.
  • 20% Fine Akadama Grit — enough mineral content to speed up the drying cycle after watering, without the heavier anchoring weight a top-heavy cactus needs but a rosette-shaped Echeveria doesn't.

One deliberate choice worth explaining: we used fine grit here, not clay pebbles. Chunky clay pebbles are the right call for epiphytic jungle cacti like Rhipsalis or Christmas Cactus, which evolved gripping bark up a tree and want something equally chunky to hold onto. Echeveria, Haworthia, and Jade didn't evolve in trees — they grow low, in rocky ground, and want fine mineral drainage close to the roots, not big pebbles to climb. Same logic as the rest of this range: match the ingredient to what the plant actually evolved to grow in, not just to a generic "well-draining" claim.

Good For:

  • Echeveria — the classic rosette succulent, and the one most people picture when they hear the word
  • Haworthia and Gasteria — slow-growing windowsill favourites that rot fast in anything too wet
  • Jade Plant (Crassula) and other thick-leaved succulents
  • Aloe Vera and other succulent-leaved Aloes
  • General succulent collections where you want one reliable mix for the whole shelf

Technical Specifications:

  • Composition: 50% Coco Coir / 30% Perlite / 20% Fine Akadama Grit
  • Fertiliser: None added — genuinely unfertilised
  • Best Suited For: Echeveria, Haworthia, Jade Plant, Aloe, and classic rosette or thick-leaved succulents
