Ask most people what they want from a potting soil and they'll describe, without meaning to, a decision-making system: how much to feed, how often, in what ratio. It suits ferns — Boston Fern, Maidenhair — which want the constant moisture peat is good at holding. It suits Calathea and Maranta too, provided the pot drains properly, since unlike the rot-prone aroids these are soil-dwellers by nature, not tree-dwellers on sabbatical in a pot. Begonias and African Violets, which want a light, gently-fed, moisture-retentive soil rather than an aggressive fast-drain mix, do well in it.
