Meet the Maker: Sophie Ora of Grenade Nutrients

Built behind a grow-shop counter, not in a boardroom

Grenade Nutrients wasn't dreamed up by a marketing department. It was built by Sophie Ora, who has been running a UK hydroponics shop since 2008, starting in what Sophie reckons was the smallest high-street grow shop in the industry. A fire in 2013 took everything. Within two months Sophie had the doors open and was trading again, carried through by a loyal crowd of regulars. That same stubbornness runs through everything Grenade makes.

How the grenade got its pin pulled

In mid-2022 Sophie's business partner showed her the grenade bottle, and Sophie knew straight away there was something worth putting inside it. The first product was Grenade Black, built to take on synthetic, chemical bloom hardeners with a natural alternative. The goal was a formula that doesn't alter a plant's genetics, but brings out its taste, flavour and density, with a few stress-relieving extras along the way. Grenade Green followed in August 2024, using inputs rarely seen in this industry, collagen among them.

The rule for every product is simple. As Sophie puts it: "There are enough replicas of great products out there." Grenade won't be another one.

The myth Sophie would like to put to bed

Ask Sophie what drives her mad and it's the idea that every plant growth regulator is bad news. Plants run on natural regulators such as auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins. The problem has always been the harsh synthetic versions, and the assumption that if something works, it must be chemical. Years of research have given Sophie the evidence to explain the difference, and Grenade is the result. In the brand's own words: we don't mutate your crops.

Sophie explains all of this without talking down to anyone: "I always make it clear that we are all beginners at something."

Small team, done properly

Grenade is designed, branded, bottled, labelled and distributed in-house, and doing it all themselves is what keeps the vision clear. Sophie still works six days a week, and between research, UK shop visits and European trade shows, builds the brand on the same principles that have kept her counter busy for nearly two decades. Ask Sophie for the secret and the answer is short: "Trust, above everything. Good advice, no BS, product knowledge, and problem solving." Nobody walks away from Sophie with a product she doesn't honestly believe will help their garden, and that's the standard every Grenade bottle has to meet.

Off the clock

Sophie's favourite plant to grow? Indoor citrus trees. Her display is so lush that people regularly ask if it's fake. It isn't.

"It's a product that I'm proud of. You should all try it!"
