LECA & Coco Monstera & Aroid Mix 60/40 – Growth Technology
⚪ Type: Unfertilised / Blank Canvas
No nutrients have been added at all. This gives you total control over feeding from day one, with zero risk of the substrate fighting your own nutrient plan. The tradeoff: you must start feeding immediately – there's no built-in safety net if you forget or under-feed early on.
The Most Expensive Thing in Your Plant Collection Is Usually the Pot of Wet Mud It's Sitting In
Here is a strange fact about houseplant keeping: people will spend £80 on a Monstera cutting and then plant it in whatever compost was on offer at the garden centre. Then they wonder why it sulks. Most aroids are not killed by neglect. They are killed by kindness – too much water, in a mix too dense to let it go. Roots need air as much as they need water, and a soggy pot gives them neither.
Growth Technology 60/40 is the fix that removes the guesswork. It blends 60% large clay pebbles with 40% coco, so the mix has proper structure but a much looser profile than coco alone. Water runs through; air follows it in. The result is a mix that is genuinely hard to overwater – which, for most of us, is the whole battle.
Why the Big Pebbles Matter
Growth Technology uses larger 8–16mm clay pebbles, and size is the point. Big pebbles leave big gaps, and big gaps are where oxygen lives. Unlike perlite, clay pebbles don't float to the top or crumble; unlike bark, they don't rot down and compact. The air channels you have on day one are the air channels you still have a year later.

One Bag, Two Powerful Applications
1. The Low-Maintenance Standalone Hydro & Semi-Hydro Medium
Ideal for passive hydroponics, reservoir pots and self-watering planters. The coco acts as a wick, holding a gentle moisture buffer so you don't have to water constantly, while the clay pebbles keep the root zone full of air.
2. The "No-Rot" Chunky Soil Upgrade
Blending your own tropical mixes? Add 1 part Growth Technology 60/40 to 2 parts of your usual potting soil to dramatically improve drainage and protect against root rot.
Perfect For
- Monsteras – Deliciosa, Adansonii, Albo and Thai Constellation love the chunky, airy structure around their thick roots.
- Alocasias – Frydek, Polly, Black Velvet and Zebrina thrive on fast wet-dry cycles.
- Anthuriums & Philodendrons – roots can wind and cling to the pebbles, just as they cling to bark in the wild.
- Hoyas & Orchids – sensitive to overwatering and happiest in fast-draining, airy media.
Rose's Pro-Tip
Give the mix a good rinse through before you pot up – it settles any dust and saturates the pebbles so they start working straight away. Then water thoroughly and let the top few centimetres dry before the next drink. With a 60/40 the danger is no longer drowning your plant; if anything, check it a little more often in a hot spell, because it drains so freely.
