Jiffy PRO7 Light Mix – Peat Potting Soil for Houseplants & Propagation
⚙️ Type: Mineral
Nutrients are refined into an exact, known ratio and are immediately available to your plant. This gives you precise, fast-acting, consistent results every time. The tradeoff: it's easier to overfeed and cause root burn if dosing isn't carefully managed, and it doesn't contribute to long-term soil biology the way organic feeds do.
Most soil is sold on the strength of what it contains. Jiffy PRO7 Light Mix is sold, more unusually, on the strength of what it deliberately leaves out. It's a peat and perlite blend from Jiffy's RHP-certified facility in Estonia, carrying only a minimal mineral starter charge — which sounds like doing less, and is actually the entire point.
Here's the thing about a heavily pre-fertilised bag of soil: it's already decided how your plant is going to be fed before you've even opened it. That's convenient right up until your plant disagrees, at which point you're stuck negotiating with a substrate that doesn't know it's wrong. PRO7 Light Mix skips the argument. A gentle EC of 1.0 gets root development going in the first week, and after that, you decide — not the bag.
Who This Is Actually For
The low, self-regulating charge (pH held steady at 5.8) is precisely what suits plants that punish overfeeding rather than shrug it off:
- Calathea & Goeppertia (Prayer Plants, Zebra Plants, Pinstripe Plants) — famously quick to sulk at anything heavier
- Begonias (Rex, Polka Dot, Cane) — want steady moisture, not a chemical hit
- Ferns (Boston, Maidenhair, Bird's Nest) — thrive on the airy, high-porosity structure
- Peace Lilies — forgiving of most things except a soil that won't drain
- Alocasia & Jewel Alocasias (Polly, Black Velvet) — benefit from the low-salt starting point
- Fresh Cuttings & Node Propagation — arguably where this earns its keep the most, since a stressed new root has zero tolerance for a substrate that's already loaded with opinions
What Actually Makes This One Jiffy's, Not Anyone Else's
The blend itself — white and black peat, perlite, a whisper of trace elements and lime — is manufactured to RHP standard at Jiffy's own facility in Estonia, which is a fairly unglamorous sentence for what is, in practice, a guarantee: consistent structure, bag after bag, rather than the variable quality that gives peat-based soil its bad reputation. It's built with an open, springy texture specifically to handle automated irrigation without waterlogging — the same property that happens to make it excellent for hand-watering too, since a soil that can survive being over-irrigated by a machine is not going to be troubled by an enthusiastic human with a watering can.
How To Use It
Fill your pot, tap the sides to settle it, and resist the urge to press it down — the aeration is the whole product. Plant your seeds, cuttings, or young rooted plants, and start proper feeding after the first week. Jiffy's own recommendation is a staged approach: VitaLink PlantStart during propagation, VitaLink Earth Grow through the vegetative phase, and VitaLink Earth Bloom once flowering begins — though because this is a genuinely low-EC base, your own preferred coco or houseplant feed will work just as well.
If you're running automatic irrigation, make sure water is actually reaching and draining through the full depth of the substrate — a surface that looks watered but stays dry underneath is how mould gets started, not overwatering itself.
