Stretch Plant Support Net with Hooks – Elastic Scrog Netting for Grow Tents, Tomatoes & Chillies | Black Flag Horticulture

Plants are terrible at sharing. Left alone, every one of them grows like a Christmas tree: one greedy main stem racing for the light while the side shoots below sulk in its shadow. You can fix that with a bigger light and a bigger electricity bill, or you can fix it with a few metres of stretchy cord. The cord is cheaper.

This elastic stretch net hooks onto the poles of your grow tent or frame and turns your plants' tops into a flat, even canopy, so every shoot gets its fair share of light instead of the tallest one taking the lot. It also does the less glamorous job of quietly holding up heavy tomato trusses, chilli branches and pepper stems so they don't snap under their own success.

Which size do I need?

Size Fits tents / frames of Square size
1.2m x 1.2m 1m x 1m up to 1.2m x 1.2m (3ft x 3ft to 4ft x 4ft) approx. 177mm (7") when stretched
2.4m x 1.2m 2.4m x 1.2m (8ft x 4ft) approx. 177mm (7") when stretched

A note on the packet: the label may show sizes in m² (for example "1m² | 1.2m²"). That's the manufacturer's shorthand for the range of tent sizes the net fits, not the net measuring 1m x 1.2m. The 1.2m net will stretch to cover a full 1.2m x 1.2m tent. Packaging and branding may also vary between batches; the net inside does the same job.

Why it earns its place

  • Even light, better crops: spreading growth sideways means more of the plant sits in the bright zone under your light, rather than one tall top hogging it.
  • Elastic, not rigid: the knotted elasticated cord flexes with the plant and stretches to fit, so you're not wrestling a stiff grid into place.
  • Height you can change: hook it on at any height and move it up as the plants grow. Many growers run two nets in a 2m tall tent: one low for training, one higher for support.
  • Gentle on stems: soft cord holds branches up without cutting into them.
  • Reusable: unhook, rinse, and use it again next season.

Good for

Tomatoes, chillies, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers and other heavy croppers in grow tents, greenhouses, polytunnels and raised-bed frames, plus any indoor plant that would rather sprawl than stand up straight.

How to use it

  1. Hook the corners onto your tent poles or frame at about 20–30cm above the pots.
  2. Stretch it out evenly so the squares are roughly the same size.
  3. As shoots grow through, gently tuck the tallest ones back under and guide them sideways into an empty square.
  4. Keep tucking for a couple of weeks until the canopy fills the net, then let the plants grow up through it.

Rose's Pro-Tip: start earlier than feels necessary. A young stem bends happily; an older one sulks and snaps. If you're running a second net for support, put it on about 20cm above the first before the plants get heavy, not after a branch has already flopped.
