Base Feeds vs. Additives — What Your Plants Actually Need

If you're new to feeding plants properly, the wall of bottles in any hydroponics shop can look intimidating. Here's the actual breakdown, no marketing spin.

Base feeds do the heavy lifting. These are your core nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, plus the trace elements — delivered in a Grow (vegetative) and Bloom (flowering) formula, or a combined A&B set. If you buy nothing else, this is the one thing your plants genuinely can't do without. Canna Coco A&B, BioBizz All-Mix, Vitalink Hydro Max — whatever the brand, this is the foundation everything else sits on top of.

Additives are targeted extras. Root stimulators (like Rhizotonic), flowering boosters (like Canna Boost Accelerator), and enzyme products all do one specific job well — but none of them replace a base feed. Think of them as fine-tuning, not fuel.

Where people waste money: buying five additives before nailing the base feed. A cheap base feed done right will outperform an expensive base feed paired with the wrong watering routine or growing media. Get the foundation solid first — clay pebbles or coco for drainage, a proper base feed on schedule — before layering on extras.

Our honest recommendation for beginners: one base feed (A&B set), one root stimulator for the early stage, and stop there until you've grown at least one full cycle. You'll learn more from watching how plants respond to the basics than from throwing every additive at them at once.
