Improves aeration

Soil has many properties which make it desirable to grow in. It's full of naturally-present nutrients and is home to a range of helpful microlife. However, it can be difficult to maintain the right consistency. Dry, dusty soil can be poor at holding moisture. Dense, clay-like soil is difficult for roots to permeate and for oxygen to travel through.

Perlite is a natural volcanic rock used to improve the structure of soil. It's highly porous and allows oxygen to circulate through the root system.

Adding perlite to your soil can promote healthy growth in the rhizosphere and encourage oxygen flow to your plants.

No pain, just drain

Perlite also facilitates water movement. Its pebble-shaped structure creates small gaps for water to travel through, helping it reach deeper into the substrate. Dense soil and fibrous substrates like coco are prone to soaking water straight up without distributing it.

Worse, it flows straight through the substrate and out again. It's a waste of precious nutrients and does nothing for your plants!

Both of these can lead to overwatering, which creates excess water at the bottom of your pot and can cause root disease.

When the substrate is enhanced with perlite, plants take in more water and drain more efficiently. They'll receive all the nutrient solution they need and any excess will be transported away from your root network.

A Finer Grade for Delicate Root Systems

At 0-6mm, Plagron Perlite is finer than most horticultural perlite on the market. That matters for houseplant use specifically: a finer grade blends more evenly into small pots and delicate potting mixes, making it a strong choice for seed starting, cuttings, and succulents or cacti where you're hand-building a fine, gritty mix rather than a chunky one. Mixed at 10-35% into your existing potting soil, it's exactly the amendment that stops a heavier houseplant mix from staying waterlogged.
