Tropic 100% Coco Pro – Coco Coir Potting Base for Houseplants & DIY Mixes
🌿 Type: Lightly Pre-Charged / Low-EC Base
A coco base with a light starter charge (EC 0.6–1.0) built in at the factory. It's enough to stop fresh roots sulking in their first week or two, but not enough to feed a plant for long. The tradeoff: you'll need to start your own feeding routine within the first couple of weeks.
The most honest bag of "100% Coco" you'll ever buy
A small confession on Tropic's behalf. The bag says 100% Coco Pro. The spec sheet says 80% premium cocopeat and 20% fine peat moss, plus limestone, calcium nitrate and a starter fertiliser. We think you deserve to know that before you buy rather than after, and frankly the recipe is better than the name.
Raw coco has a famous bad habit: it arrives hungry for calcium and quietly takes it from your plant's first meals. Tropic have added limestone and calcium nitrate to the mix, giving it a head start on calcium and settling the pH before the bag is even opened. The fine peat smooths out coco's tendency to dry patchily, giving an even, springy crumb that rewets the way you'd hope and holds moisture the way a Calathea insists upon.
Nobody actually wants coco coir
What people want is a Calathea that doesn't crisp at the edges, a fern that is still green in February, and a cutting that roots instead of rots. Coco is simply the most dependable way of getting there. It holds water like a sponge but never collapses into mud, so roots get a drink and a breath at the same time.
Seen properly, a bag of good substrate isn't a purchase at all; it's an insurance policy. The premium is a few pounds. The claim it protects you from is a £30 plant slowly drowning in cheap DIY-store compost that has set like a brownie.
Perfect for moisture-lovers, makers and growers
- Calathea, Maranta & Prayer Plants: Consistent, even moisture without waterlogging, which is exactly what these famously dramatic plants spend their lives asking for.
- Ferns, Peace Lilies & Fittonia: Thirsty plants that punish you for letting them dry out get a forgiving, water-holding root zone.
- Pothos, Philodendron & Syngonium: A clean, airy base that suits fast-rooting climbers and trailers.
- Cuttings & Propagation: Low EC and a gentle charge make it kind to new roots that would burn in a rich soil.
- DIY Mix Builders: The blank-ish canvas for your own recipes. Add perlite for a classic 70/30, LECA or bark for a chunky aroid mix, or plenty of grit and pumice for a free-draining cactus and succulent blend.
- Coco & Hydro Growers: Pots, troughs and run-to-waste setups fed with coco A&B nutrients.
Key Features
- Limed and calcium-loaded: Limestone and calcium nitrate are already in the mix, giving a settled pH and a calcium head start.
- Gentle starter charge: EC 0.8 (range 0.6–1.0) mS/cm, enough for a soft landing without burning young roots.
- Ready to use: Loose from the bag. No bricks to soak, no buckets to stir.
- Holds water, keeps air: Coco's natural structure keeps oxygen at the roots while staying evenly moist.
- Sample to 50L: Hand-decanted into a sample, 1L, 5L, 10L and 20L for shelves and flats, or the original 50L bag (and a two-bag deal) for bigger jobs.
🌱 Rose's Pro-Tip: Coco Pro already carries a light starter charge, so go gently. Water in with pH-adjusted water (aim for 5.8–6.2) or a weak, quarter-strength coco feed, then build up to a normal coco-specific feed over the following 1–2 weeks. Feed little and often rather than big and rarely; coco rewards routine, not heroics.
How to Use
- Fluff it up: Bags compact in transit. Break up any clumps with your fingers before potting.
- Pot loosely: Fill the pot, settle it with a few taps on the side, and don't press down hard. The air pockets are the point.
- Water in: Soak thoroughly until a little runs out of the drainage holes.
- Start feeding: Build up to a light coco feed over 1–2 weeks, or sooner for fast growers showing pale new leaves.
- Don't let it sit: Empty saucers after watering so roots aren't standing in runoff.
