Soil Ninja Biochar – Fine Horticultural Biochar for Houseplants, Aroids & Semi-Hydro

Soil Ninja Biochar is a favourite with UK houseplant growers — light, fine biochar flakes that slot neatly between bark, perlite, pumice and coco without leaving big voids. Black Flag Horticulture supplies genuine Soil Ninja Biochar and decants it by hand at our Coventry unit, so you can buy exactly the amount you need, from a 0.5L top-up to a 60L bulk bag.

Each flake is a honeycomb of microscopic pores. That huge internal surface area holds air and moisture at the same time, gives beneficial bacteria and fungi somewhere to live, and helps soak up the impurities and stale odours that build up in wet, tired potting mixes.

Why growers add biochar

  • Aeration & drainage: rigid flakes stop mixes collapsing and compacting, keeping oxygen around the roots and reducing the risk of root rot.
  • Moisture buffering: pores hold water and release it slowly, so mixes dry evenly instead of swinging from soggy to bone-dry.
  • Microbe habitat: a stable home for beneficial soil life — pair with worm castings or mycorrhizae for a living mix.
  • Cleaner root zone: helps adsorb impurities from tap water and fertiliser residues and reduces sour, swampy smells in closed pots and terrariums.
  • Nutrient holding: high cation exchange capacity helps hold feed in the root zone rather than washing straight through.
  • Long-lasting: biochar is extremely stable — it doesn't rot down like bark or coir, so your mix keeps its structure for years.
  • Peat-free & sustainable: a stable form of carbon that stays locked in your soil instead of the atmosphere.

Perfect for

  • Aroids: Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Alocasia, Syngonium, Pothos, Scindapsus.
  • Semi-hydro & LECA/pon: mix 5–10% into LECA, pumice or mineral mixes to keep reservoirs fresher and reduce hard-water deposits.
  • Orchids: Phalaenopsis and other epiphytes — blend with bark and sphagnum for an open, sweet-smelling mix.
  • Carnivorous plants & terrariums: a nutrient-free, inert layer or mix-in for closed jars, bioactive vivariums and springtail cultures.
  • Bonsai & cacti/succulents: adds grit-like structure without the weight.
  • Seeds & propagation: a light sprinkle in seed and cutting mixes helps keep compost open and fresh.
  • Garden soil improver: dig into beds, borders and containers to improve heavy clay or hungry sandy soils.

Recommended mix ratios

  • General houseplant mix: 5–10% biochar.
  • Chunky aroid mix: 10–15% biochar with bark, perlite and coco.
  • Semi-hydro / LECA: 5–10% biochar blended through.
  • Orchids: 10–20% biochar with bark.
  • Terrariums: a 1–2cm layer above the drainage layer, or 10–20% in the substrate.
  • Garden beds: roughly 1–2L per square metre, forked into the top 15cm.

How to use

  1. Rinse (optional): give it a quick rinse in a sieve to settle any fine dust — or wear a mask when mixing dry.
  2. Pre-soak: for semi-hydro, soak for a few hours so the pores are fully hydrated.
  3. Charge (optional): soak in a dilute feed or worm-cast tea for 24 hours to "charge" it before mixing into soil.
  4. Mix & pot: blend evenly at the ratios above and pot up as normal.

Which size do I need?

  • Sample / 0.5L: try it, or top up a terrarium.
  • 1L / 2.5L / 3L: enough to amend several small-to-medium pots.
  • 5L / 7.5L / 10L: a full repotting session or a growing collection.
  • 15L / 25L: serious collectors, plant shops and allotments.
  • 40L / 60L: bulk and trade — mix your own blends at the best price per litre.

FAQs

Is biochar the same as activated charcoal?
No. Activated charcoal is processed for maximum adsorption and is usually very fine and dusty. Biochar is made specifically for soil — it's chunkier, cheaper per litre and better at building structure and supporting microbes.

Does it contain fertiliser?
No. It's plain, uncharged biochar. Charge it yourself if you want a nutrient head start.

Will it change my pH?
Biochar is mildly alkaline. At 5–15% in a mix the effect is small; rinse before use for very acid-loving plants.

Is it dusty?
Some fines are natural. A quick rinse removes most of them.

Is it safe for pets and vivariums?
It's a natural, inert carbon material commonly used in bioactive vivarium builds.
